Almost one in 20 adults in America are vaping now. Young or old, rich or poor, nicotine or without, vaping is a culture. Very few communities are as diverse and creative as vaping.
The selection and variety of vape flavors are overwhelming at first. Newcomers will need to spend some time learning about vape juice and vaping in general. Each vaper has their own methods and preferences on what makes the best vape.
The best e-juice flavors vary based on mood and what you want your vaping experience to become. Are you trying to replicate the experience of smoking a cigarette? Do you enjoy hookah and want your own portable version?
Vaping is used for stress and anxiety, to ward off food cravings, or get your dessert fix without the calories. Vape flavors have come a long way from their inception. Flavorings are often identical to their physical counterparts.
In order to help you find your little slice of heaven, we’ve produced a guide on e-juices. We’ll break down a wide range of blends, flavors, and custom selections.
Differences Between PG and VG
The foundation of vape juice is based on PG or VG. PG stands for Propylene Glycol, the same stuff used in asthma inhalers. VG stands for Vegetable Glycerol, a common food additive found in many packaged goods.
These are the two most common e-juice ingredients, outside of nicotine users. Each base has its own properties that change the experience of vaping. PG, for example, heightens the intensity of flavors.
Some don’t like PG mixtures because of the harshness of the ‘throat hit’ and dehydrating effects. VG blends are heavier and carry an innate sweetness. The result is a smoother hit, but a reduction in flavor intensity.
Vegetable glycerin has few side-effects, while PG may trigger allergic reactions for some. Many juices will blend a specific ration of the two bases. Look for specific blends geared towards specific audiences (clouders, flavor mixing, and etc.)
Many vapers are former smokers. Vaping offers a real alternative to smoking. Vapor delivers a clean and pure form of nicotine with e-juices. You can find a range of nicotine choices for e-juice blends.
On the container, you’ll see a measurement or concentration amount of nicotine. The average vape juice will contain about 5% nicotine by volume. That’s the equivalent of a pack of cigarettes.
Heavy smokers will want to start with e-juices with 20-30mg of nicotine, while casuals should stay below 6mg. You’ll want to find the right concentration because if it’s to low, you may smoke too much. If you start too high, you’ll get some gnarly headaches.
General Rules to E-Juices
In order to find the best e-juice flavors, you’ll need to do a lot of trial-and-error. That’s because one brand’s e-juice flavors may differ in the formula from another. This is most noticeable with sweeter flavors, such as banana or cotton candy.
Different brands also provide different selections for nicotine concentrations. There are some that provide a wider array and specialize in nicotine blends. You should try to find a local dealer that allows “taste testing”.
Online vape stores offer the best value and the greatest selections, though. You can even find samplers with 1-2 dozen flavors to try out.
Taste the Rainbow, Vape the Rainbow
Because e-juice flavors span such a wide range of flavors, we’re going to try to break them down into categories. Vape flavors cover all types of foods and drinks, as well as things that delve into the weird.
Those who are transitioning from smoking cigarettes every day may find inhaling cotton candy a little odd. Thankfully, there are plenty of choices that allow you to taste tobacco without the laundry list of chemicals. This also helps reduce the intensity of craving your former habits.
Vape juices can even mimic the complex and deep flavors of a Cuban Cigar. Extracting the flavors of tobacco leaves is a lot easier than entire desserts or meals.
Vape pens are very popular as aromatherapy tools. Those who have never and would never smoke big advocates for herbal vape juices. Every essential oil and natural herb combination you can think of probably has an e-juice.
Popular relaxation blends include notes of vanilla, lavender, anise, green tea, cinnamon, mint, cardamom, ginger, fennel, and citrus zests. These organic flavors and scents are intoxicating when vaping. It’s the superior method of delivery for treating stress, anxiety, and anger.
For increased pain relief, these natural herbs and spices pair well with cannabis. The combination of anti-inflammatory properties and mental relaxation work better than many prescription drugs.
Probably the most popular vape juice category is of the confectionery type. The sweet smells of candy vapes, baked goods, and sodas are hard to resist. There are a few different varieties of sweet juice flavors, usually separated by breakfast, candy, and desserts.
Some legendary flavors to try:
- French Toast
- Cookies and Cream
- Dr. Pepper
- Kettle Corn
- Coffee Cake
- Banana Split
Candy vapes are so mainstream now, virtually every store candy has a juice. Snickers, Twizzlers, Skittles, Starbursts, and Junior Mints are some popular picks. More generic candy flavors, like caramel, bubble gum, and chocolate, are great bases for reproducing your favorite brands.
Ironically, the sour candy juices are some of the best types of sour flavors out there.
If you like sweeter flavors, but prefer something a bit more subtle, pick a fruit juice. Fruity vapes can taste close to the real thing. Some brands miss the mark on including the sour or bitter undertones, so you’ll need to experiment.
The safest bets are watermelon, guava, dragon fruit, peach, strawberry, pineapple, and banana. You can also find a lot of very good mixed fruit juices, too, like watermelon kiwi, strawberry banana, peaches and cream, peanut butter and banana, and forest berry blends. Keep in mind that most “fruit punch” mixes will lean faithfully towards the sugary drinks.
Fruit vapes offer some of the most refreshing flavors for the summer. Stock up and do some of your own mixing (more info on that later).
Most foodies out there have at least one guilty pleasure dish or drink. Vaping has opened the door on strange flavor combinations. Sweet, sour, and herbal blends are pretty safe mixes.
Adding a savory element may earn you some looks, especially outside the vape community. Have you ever wanted to have some seafood? What about a nice beefy patty?
You can do that with niche vape juices. Who knows, maybe you’ll satisfy those cravings for hot dogs and save yourself from unnecessary calories? It could also backfire and increase those cravings, though.
Other unusual flavors you might see out there: milk, cactus juice, pepper, red bull (people drink red bull for flavor?), nachos, and butter.
Drinks are another popular category for vaping. Practically every type of drink is available as an e-juice. Coffee is very popular and you can get the flavors with or without the caffeine.
A word of caution for any beverage vape juices with caffeine: you will experience the effects in less than 10 seconds. Normally, it takes around 30 minutes for caffeine to process through the stomach. Caffeine inhaled goes from the lungs to the brain almost immediately.
One caveat to this is if your vape juice contains equal parts of nicotine and caffeine. These two can cancel out and the effects are lost or subdued.
Besides coffee, you can also get beer-flavored juices, too. These vape juice flavors won’t get you drunk, though. Experience the complex hops and barleys of craft beers whenever you want.
Hard liquor flavors also exist, but, again, without the alcohol, these flavors might seem a bit off. The best e-juice flavors for hard liquors are aged whiskeys and sipping creams.
Make the Best E-Juice Flavors Yourself
If vape juices have you wanting more, you could try your hand at mixing them. You have two choices: mix by volume or according to weight. The latter involves mixing ingredients by their density or concentration.
It will require a special calculator to find out the right levels for each ingredient. Vape juice is largely composed of a VG/PG base, so once you figure out that ratio, you weigh the rest. Nicotine and flavorings are measured in mg per mL, which provide a precise, but a harder way of mixing.
Measuring by volume requires some careful mixing, but all you need are syringes for each ingredient. The process requires fewer steps, but more cleaning. Mixing in volume is ideal for larger batches.
Trial and Error
If you love chemistry or science in general, you’ll love experimenting with vape juices. You get to control the flavor and the ratio of PG to VG. Many competitive vapers prefer to make their own juices to measure the precise amount of density.
Flavor pioneers also refine their vape juice flavors even more by steeping. Steeping is a process not too dissimilar from steeping of tea and herbs. You can either steep raw ingredients like those or you can steep concentrates.
Steeping concentrates works by allowing them time to settle and fuse with other flavors. We’re not talking steeping for a few minutes or hours, this process can take days or weeks. This is most common in niche desserts or complex flavors like sweet potatoes.
There are ways to speed up the steeping process, like doing it at high temperatures, but this can affect the end result.
Before you can definitively say that one vape juice is trash or the best ever, you must consider the delivery of it. A cheap vaporizer can add some unpleasant flavors to e-juices. Most commonly, you’ll find certain wicks burn easily and retain bitter flavors.
Atomizers that aren’t cleaned regularly can add metallic notes or chemical tastes. Your PG/VG ratio can also determine how your juice is delivered, too. Remember, PG gives a sharper, more intense flavor, while PG is mellower and lingers more.
You should seriously consider buying yourself a vaporizer that will last a long time and has easily replaceable parts.
Shopping Online for Vape Juice
On your hunt for the best e-juice flavors, watch out for bargain-bin juices. Some websites will sell you on deals that are half the price of others. Take a look at the labels on these e-juices, make sure you’re not inhaling a science experiment.
You should see a short list: glycol, flavorings, and nicotine if you chose it. When you start getting into weird ingredient lists (or no lists at all!) you are rolling the dice. The flavor will probably taste “off” and there’s no rigorous testing to know what kind of side-effects it may have.
Vaping is incredibly cheap as an alternative for smokers. Don’t get too overzealous on saving by buying in bulk online.
