If you’re both a vaper and a self-professed “foodie,” then you’ve probably already explored the vast world of e-juice flavors, such as chocolates, fruits, nuts, coffee, custards, and more, but what about the pure essence of a monkey fart?
Has that one ever crossed your mind? Maybe it would have if you realized it’s a delectable mixture of banana nut bread, graham cracker, and honey.
(The flatulence of a primate has never tasted so sweet.)
Point is, most e-juice companies and stores have a lot to offer, so much so that even their product pages are often split up by entire flavor profiles.
How does one balance the double life of an e-liquid enthusiast and a foodie with that refined palate?
Let’s look at ways your taste buds can be affected by e-liquids, as well as how pairing them with food and drinks can lead to wonderful combinations.
What is Vaper’s Tongue?
You may have heard the term floating around on forums, Facebook groups, or by word of mouth.
It sounds like either a pesky health risk or a brand new flavor of e-liquids.
Neither, actually. It’s a syndrome in which your taste buds simply can’t discern or taste flavors anymore.
There are a few causes that seem likely to produce vaper’s tongue:
- Repetitive flavors
- Excessive vaping
Some of these may not be that fun or completely out of your control, but we’ll look at them a little closer first.
Have you ever eaten a whole gallon of ice cream in a single night? Ate nothing but macaroni and cheese dinners for an entire week?
Chances are that chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream probably didn’t taste a whole lot like chocolate chip cookie dough by the last bite. It probably tasted like one thing: cold.
As for that macaroni and cheese? The cheese suddenly turned into a tasteless paste.
Hell, even if we upgrade our hypotheticals here to fine wine and rare steak dinners for an entire week, the idea remains the same. The “wow factor” of that steak and wine will probably just fall off by the end of the week.
This applies to vaping as well. It can be tempting to find a flavor profile you love and stick with it to the bitter end, but that’s just what it might end up becoming: the bitter end.
There are just a couple facts here you can’t take for granted:
- Vaping causes dehydration
- Dehydration negatively affects your sense of taste
See a correlation?
It sucks, but it’s a fact. Take it for what it’s worth.
Sickness also negatively affects your sense of taste.
If you’re sick, you might find that you’ll start to lose your sense of taste. That’s less “vaper’s tongue” and more just being sick, but still, it’s something to look out for.
Guess what? Sometimes, you can have too much of a good thing.
This is really similar to the “repetitive flavors” section, but rather than vaping too many of the same e-liquids, vaping too much in and of itself is only going to worsen any and all of the above issues.
The Best Vaper’s Tongue Fixes
“I kahn feew mah wips” – You, probably after developing vaper’s tongue.
What can we do to solve this and get on with the pairings?
Here are some of the best and most common cures for vaper’s tongue:
- Vape different flavors (and vary them often)
- Drink lots of water
- Curb or cut out vaping entirely when you’re sick
- Take a break from vaping once in a while
The above list directly relates to the causes of vaper’s tongue mentioned before, but here are a few other solutions that some people have found to be helpful:
- Brush your teeth (scrub that tongue)
- Smell roasted coffee beans
- Vape menthol e-liquids
While none of these are necessarily a guaranteed fix, a lot of electronic cigarette users have reported them working.
Stick to these principles and you’ll either avoid vaper’s tongue entirely or lessen its effects over time.
Glad we got that out of the way.
Vaper’s tongue is no fun, but it’s important to establish what can negatively affect your taste buds if we’re really going to explore the ways in which e-liquids can also blow your taste buds away…
The Joys of Pairing E-Liquids
Before we dive into the more complex pairings, let’s look at some basic categories first.
While the list of flavors for e-liquids out there is seemingly endless, there are a few common categories:
Just like you probably wouldn’t pair a smokey glass of peated scotch with a white fish, you probably wouldn’t want to pair tobacco-heavy e-liquids with a bowl of Fruit Loops.
Just as in the world of a foodie, some e-liquid pairings work and some don’t.
One thing to consider when pairing e-liquids is to just keep it simple and vape what you’re eating or drinking.
Do you have a sweet tooth and like to snack on candy often? Pair it with a similar candy-flavored e-liquid or just a general candy flavor.
Are you a member of the Swedish Fish-Aholics Anonymous? Pair it up with a similar e-liquid.
Maybe you’re a coffee snob. Only the finest, purest coffee will do for you. Pair it up with a coffee flavor as well.
Something to keep in mind, though, is that some e-liquids are simple flavors and some are complex. For example, if you only want a pure coffee flavor, something like Coffee will do well (as it’s one flavor), whereas Irish Cream is coffee, Irish whiskey, chocolate, and cream.
This is a good way to really enhance flavors you already love or double down on a specific experience of a taste you’re looking to make last.
Rather than finding different flavors that complement each other, you may just want to keep that flavor train chugging along!
Pairing E-Liquids and Food
Often foodies find ways to pair food and drinks, but if you take the drink out the equation then you might find interesting ways to pair food and e-liquids.
Since coffee was already mentioned, how about when you’re having your waffles, cereal, or donuts for breakfast, have a coffee vape rather than the coffee itself?
You could even change up the fruit itself. Vape some Red Apple e-liquid and now you’ve got a strawberry and apple salad with balsamic dressing.
That’s a light, summer combination to end all summer combos.
Also, just like how a fish dinners pair well with lighter and citrusy wines, lighter e-liquids might go well with them, too.
In this case, maybe try to find e-liquids that are light in color or have an overall “lighter” description to them.
Blackberry Mojito, for example, may not actually be a white wine flavor, but it’s still fruity, light, and based on an alcohol.
This actually leads to another point…
Read the Descriptions Carefully
There’s only so much you can learn from reading the ingredients label, especially when they usually just come down to the following: propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, nicotine, and flavorings.
Often, you’ll need to rely on the title and descriptions entrusted by the e-liquid makers themselves.
Sometimes, those descriptions are flowery, long, overly-detailed, or just plain misleading. Good e-liquid companies will be honest and forthcoming with their product descriptions.
Be sure to read them.
For example, the title “Blue Demon” alone may leave you scratching your head, wondering what beast lurks in that juice, but if you read the description you’ll clearly find the flavoring notes listed out: blueberry, raspberry, and Black Demon energy drink.
Great! Now you have a better idea of what you’re getting into.
Will that e-liquid pair well with your hamburger and French fries? Probably not, but it might go well with a fruit cup or a cup of yogurt (especially if you need a little pep in your step).
Pairing E-Liquids and Alcoholic Drinks
You might be having a crazy night out on the town or just enjoying a nice glass of your favorite cocktail with friends and family at your house. Either way, you may have the urge to vape alongside your drink.
This is similar to pairing e-liquids and food, but in this case, imagine the e-liquid as food.
If you’re having something heavy, such as a dark beer (porter, stout, etc.), maybe try something lighter to balance it out. A fruity e-liquid might work.
Afterall, there are many fruity beers available today, even on the darker end of the spectrum.
If you enjoy a fine scotch or bourbon, consider how nicely that pairs with a cigar. Cuban Cigar e-liquid exists, so that might scratch that itch in the same way.
This may not work for everyone, but e-liquids based on nuts tend to work well with a lot of darker liquors, such as whiskey, rum, brandy, etc. Consider something like Macadamia Nut or Pecan when pairing with those.
Signatures and Complex Mixes
Some companies have pretty much done all of the work for you.
No need to pair a food or drink with particular e-liquids, just get it all in a single bottle.
These are sometimes called Signature E-Liquid.
Take El Duder for example. It boasts a mixture of Kentucky Bourbon, coconut, toasted almond, vanilla, Madagascar vanilla, hazelnut, Virginia fire-cured tobacco, and brown sugar…
That’s a mouthful.
But you get the idea. Sometimes, the combinations and pairings have already been done for you.
Get Creative – Sky’s the Limit
If you’re a foodie, you know that the rules to food and drink pairings are more like guidelines than actual rules.
One thing that makes being a foodie so much fun in the first place is the joy of trying outlandish combinations just for the thrill of seeing what works and what doesn’t.
Those who always follow the rules and never bend or break them rarely make history.
There are lots of weird and seemingly strange pairings in the wild. If it weren’t for these daring trailblazers, then how else would the world have discovered the peanut butter hamburger or the pickled Oreo?
Don’t stop at the obvious. Consider orange soda and Vanilla Custard e-liquid.
Does that sound like an Orange Creamsicle? Pretty much, and it might even yield a similar result.
As odd as it sounds, some people have reported success with pairing fruity e-liquids and just about any cheese-related food.
All in all, just have fun with it!
Who knows, maybe pretzels dusted in sour cream and onion and Cinnamon and Fire Whiskey e-liquid is the greatest thing since milk and cookies.
You just got to see where the road will take you.
