Choosing the right e-juice for you isn’t as simple as choosing the fun-sounding name or picking what looks better than the rest. Its ingredients, flavor, and strength are crucial-to-know information that will help you maximize the vaping experience.

It might sound like a hazardous chemical but the amount of propylene glycol in vapor juice is not dangerous to our health. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention deems it safe for vaping and The Food and Drug Administration recognizes it is safe for use in food as well.
PG is odorless and tasteless, so it doesn’t interfere with the flavor. It’s a thinner synthetic liquid than vegetable glycerin. As such, vapers use it more as a base.
When you decide to experiment and make your own e-juice, find a USP-certified PG. This ensures that you’re using a food-grade product.
Vegetable glycerin is thicker and has a slightly sweet taste. Due to this, VG distorts the flavor when the vapor juice has it as the base. It’s odorless, though, like the PG.
It’s a simple sugar alcohol that’s common in food applications, which means it should be safe for vaping as well. Food-grade glycerin may act as a humectant, thickener, or even a sweetener in dairy products and other food items.

Making Clouds vs. Tasting the Flavor
If you fancy making clouds and you want to produce even thicker clouds, choose a vapor juice with a higher VG concentration than PG. The reason is that VG is thicker, whereas PG is almost similar to water in consistency.
The trade-off is that the flavor is not as strong because the sweetness interferes with the purity. As you might have guessed, a vapor juice with a higher concentration of PG has a more pronounced flavor than its counterpart. If tasting your favorite flavor is more important to you than chasing clouds, pick a higher PG to VG ratio.

Aside from producing bigger clouds, more VG in an e-liquid should also make it feel smoother to smoke. On the other hand, more PG feels drier on the throat.
PG is a humectant, which dries out your throat and mouth if you use it consistently. If you vape an e-liquid with a higher PG to VG ratio, you take a stronger throat hit. Those coming from cigarettes will likely prefer this sensation as it replicates the feeling of smoking.
If you’re the hoarder type, you might want to choose an e-liquid with higher amounts of PG to make each bottle last longer. The compound is antibacterial and acts as a preservative, while VG doesn’t exhibit these properties.
If you get to mixing your own e-liquids, we often advise to mix in even a little bit of PG to make it last longer. However, this might be a problem if you’re sensitive to it.
Some e-cig users have experienced getting an allergic reaction from propylene glycol. The symptoms may vary, but it often includes feeling a tingling sensation in the throat. In rare cases, the person might also get hives.
If you experience any discomfort in using PG, stop it and switch to vegetable glycerin. The sweet compound is less allergenic, and users found that the symptoms went away even if the e-juice contains PG as long as it’s low.
To get that throat hit without using a high-PG vapor juice, we recommend trying menthol-based flavors or higher-nicotine e-liquids.
Vapor Juice Strength
The strength of an e-juice refers to the amount of nicotine. The higher the amount, the stronger the vapor juice.
The label can either list the quantity of nicotine in percentage or in milligrams. A 1.2% nicotine, for example, means that the other 98.8% is water. This is equal to 12 mg.
If you’re a smoker who wants to transition into vaping, get a percentage that’s equal to the amount of nicotine you were getting from cigarettes. One stick often contains 18 mg to 24 mg. Refer to this general guide on what strength to choose:
5% or 50 mg
This is an extreme amount of nicotine, and it’s not meant for consecutive use. It provides an intense hit, and as such, it’s only good for occasional vaping.
3.6% or 36 mg
This is still a very strong nicotine content with a strong throat hit. It’s more suitable in a PG e-liquid.
2.4% or 24 mg
We recommend this amount for smokers who like full-flavored cigarettes. Choose PG blends for this level.
1.8% or 18 mg
This amount of nicotine is similar to that of a cigarette with regular strength. It’s also one of the most popular choices by first-time vapers.
1.2% or 12 mg
Are you a smoker who prefers the light cigarettes? This offers pretty much the same amount of nicotine and flavor.
0.6% or 6 mg
This is even lighter than light – ultra-light, if you will. For a sub ohm or temperature control mods vape setup, this is as high as you can get. It’s good for vaping at 30 to 75 watts with atomizers 0.8 ohms to 0.5 ohms.
0.3% or 3 mg
This is the more popular choice for a sub ohm or temperature control mods vape setup. It’s good for vaping at 75 to 150 watts with atomizers 0.5 ohm or less.
0.15% or 1.5 mg
It has a low amount only because the e-liquid can produce so much vapor that users will inhale more.
0% or 0 mg
This means that there’s zero nicotine in the e-liquid. This is the ultimate goal for previous smokers, and it’s also for those who like the vaping experience sans the nicotine.
Should You Go for Non-Nicotine?
Many smokers are turning to vaping to cut out its harmful effects on their body, and the culprit is nicotine. By this logic, you might assume that 0% is the best so that they can cut out nicotine. That’s not the full story, though.
Nicotine is an addictive substance. Smokers develop a dependency on it after repeated use, which makes their body yearn for it. The common advice is to get their fix even when they switch to vaping.
The level should be enough to satiate the cravings. However, if the goal is to be free of nicotine, they should gradually decrease the strength until they no longer crave the substance.
